Our Story

In 2024, suicidologist Lexi Hopkins founded Wellness ‘N Color to address the lack of support for Black women+ who struggle with suicidality. As a suicidologist, Lexi saw time and time again that there were few resources and services that specifically accounted for the experiences of Black women+ who struggle with suicidality.

There is so much stigma around suicide in the Black community, especially when it comes to Black women+, who are always expected to be strong. We are expected to suffer in silence while caring for those around us. Wellness ‘N Color creates a space for Black women+ to be cared for and uses the power of community to promote healing and wellness.

Wellness ‘N Color launched on August 5th, 2024, five years after the death of esteemed author Toni Morrison, who has always written of the incredible ways Black women+ care for one another. She inspires us, and we call upon her literary genius to strengthen our work.

We are committed to serving Black women+ (women and people with expansive gender identities), uplifting their voices, and working with our community to prevent suicide and eliminate stigma and shame.

Destigmatize and prevent suicide by creating shame-free community wellness spaces for Black women+ to heal, grow, and connect unapologetically.

A world where suicide is stigma free in Black communities, and everyone has a safe and loving space to go when they are suicidal.

Lexi Hopkins, MPH (she, her, hers)

Founder & Executive Director

Jhamae Galloway is a Senior at the University of South Carolina, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Public Health. Her academic work has centered on health equity, particularly focusing on reducing health disparities that disproportionately affect minorities in at-risk communities. Her current projects and future goals are driven by a deep commitment to dismantling these barriers and improving the overall well-being of communities nationwide. She is always exploring new ways to effectively reach and advocate for these populations. She also believes in the importance of healthy coping mechanisms—outlets that not only support personal growth but also help individuals navigate life’s challenges in meaningful ways.  Upon graduation, she plans to further my work and expand my passion within the public health field, with the goal of eventually pursuing a master’s degree in Health Policy or Epidemiology.

Lexi Hopkins, MPH is a dedicated and passionate health equity consultant and the founder of Wellness ‘N Color. She holds a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and a Master of Public Health (MPH) from Yale University where she trained as a suicidologist. Her research looks at the history of suicide in Black communities and how that impacts the modern suicide crisis among Black youth, help-seeking, and adult suicidal behaviors. She is an advocate for community-based suicide prevention that centers Black experiences.  Lexi leverages her extensive education, professional training, and lived experiences to develop and implement programs and tools aimed at empowering marginalized communities to take control of their health narratives and pushing healthcare systems to create equitable health solutions.
